Will Ahmed, Founder and CEO poses with Emily Capodilupo, SVP of Research Algorithms and Data on the … More morning of their new product launch at WHOOP HQ in Boston, MA

    John Werner

I got the only first look inside WHOOP HQ in Boston, MA on the launch day of the all new WHOOP 5.0 and WHOOP MG. I visited the office twice – first thing in the AM and mid-day (between my MIT AI Venture Studio class and MIT History class showcases). I sat down with some of the leaders who built this product – some of whom had been in the office since 4 am getting ready to roll out software features to members all over the world… while wearing novelty WHOOP branded baseball jerseys. I could feel the positivity and energy on all floors as I walked the building – the team was dialed, working hard, but calm and focussed.

New science on wearables is poised to help us to better understand very important aspects of our health.

Too many of our vital signs and health markers are left unanalyzed, until we visit a doctor’s office. Tons of data that would be actionable falls through the cracks. WHOOP and similar tools are going to change all that.

A New Era in Health Monitoring

With the launch of WHOOP 5.0 and WHOOP MG (Medical Grade), WHOOP is introducing a new way to support patient health with home care. “This isn’t just a product launch. It’s a new chapter for WHOOP and for our members,” said Will Ahmed, WHOOP Founder & CEO. “We’ve taken everything we’ve learned over the past decade, and built a platform to help our members perform and live at their peak for longer. We’ve held nothing back … It’s designed to help you understand the bigger picture of your health and how small, daily choices impact your long-term well-being.”

13 years of history went into making this new product.

    The Edge Computing Era

How is this possible? Well, one element of it is Moore’s law – the doubling of transistors on a circuit that allows for smaller and smaller devices. Another aspect is the development of foundation models that are built to allow a full-powered LLM or neural net to run on something like a smart watch or phone – or in this case, a WHOOP device.

WHOOP Co-Founder and Chief Hardware Engineer poses with the new hardware he released today.

    John Werner

This new announcement showcases the actual implementation of edge computing for real, transformative changes in our lives, a global shift in how healthcare will be done. And it comes with some pretty straightforward utilities, that any doctor or nurse would understand as time and cost savers.

The progress in on device compute power is made more impressive by the device’s 7% reduction in size. “We pushed the boundaries with the next generation hardware by adding a lot of features in a device that became smaller and smarter at the same time,” explained Aurelian Nicolae, WHOOP Co-Founder and Chief Hardware Engineer.

Blood Pressure: The Wellness & Performance Metric You Should Care About

Take blood pressure, for instance. High blood pressure or hypertension puts additional strain on your veins and arteries. It can lead to higher chances of a heart attack or stroke or other health condition.

Here’s the kicker – it affects almost half of all Americans, (according to ChatGPT), and it’s largely asymptomatic until it gets extremely high.

That means there are tens of millions of people walking around, not knowing that they have high blood pressure. There are tens of millions more who may be on a medication, but not sure if it is controlling their blood pressure correctly, or how their blood pressure has changed over time.

Another challenge is that blood pressure changes throughout the day and night. It changes according to an amazing number of stimuli. It changes from moment to moment, and it’s hard to measure that with a traditional cuff. Yes, you can go in and take your blood pressure at the doctor’s office, but that only represents a tiny snapshot in what is an ocean of data.

Being able to collect nightly passive blood pressure readings and trend them over time is a total game-changer. It will show doctors and medical professionals a true picture of someone’s hypertension – as well as potentially more about what it responds to, when it happens, how long it is sustained for, etc.,

“High blood pressure is often completely asymptomatic, but that doesn’t mean it’s not dangerous,” explains Emily Capodilupo, WHOOP’s Senior Vice President of Research, Algorithms, and Data, whose team developed this feature. “If you know that you have high blood pressure, you can reverse it through lifestyle changes or inexpensive, generic medications—but you do have to know.”

It’s such a critical component of well-being and performance — linked to sleep, stress, recovery and performance.

Maybe you’ve only taken blood pressure readings once a year at an annual physical – or maybe not even bothered to comply with them. How would you know your blood pressure is high?

In one case, an exercise‑enthusiast employee learned of his high blood pressure through MG testing and is now on a path to improve this important wellness metrics.

For another practical example of data-based intervention, the blood pressure feature is similar to what WHOOP did with HRV many years ago. Historically, HRV was something that your average person didn’t know, and yet it’s a metric that tells an important story about your overall well-being. WHOOP is making blood pressure insights more accessible to people, so you can know your metric and understand your baseline, and can make lifestyle changes to live better.

    ECG-Based Arrhythmia Screening

FDA Cleared in 35 countries, and counting, WHOOP’s new Heart Screener feature, lets members take on-demand ECG readings to screen for atrial fibrillation (Afib), tachycardia, or bradycardia, and share reports with their doctors or loved ones. Afib is the most common type of arrhythmia, and WHOOP has achieved clinical-grade detection rates with this feature. Intensive monitoring studies find Afib in up to 25% of post-stroke/TIA patients without prior diagnosis—and 88% of those episodes would slip by if monitoring stopped at 30 days.

In addition, Afib is often asymptomatic and episodic, meaning most people don’t even know they have it until it presents potentially life-threatening symptoms or complications.

    John Wenrer

Fit and healthy individuals are especially at risk — and research shows that long-term endurance athletes face a slightly increased likelihood of AFib. WHOOP now equips you with tools to better understand and assess these risks, empowering you with insights to stay informed about your heart health before it’s dangerous.

Meanwhile, the WHOOP ECG lets you see an instantaneous, detailed snapshot of your heart’s electrical activity. The ECG will detect Normal Sinus Rhythm (meaning your heart is functioning properly), AFib, and Low or High Heart Rate (potential signs of bradycardia or tachycardia).

“Early detection of atrial fibrillation isn’t a nice-to-have—it’s lifesaving,” says Capodilupo. Left untreated, AFib can lead to blood clots and strokes after just 48 hours, so early detection and treatment is critical.

Actionable Insights, Not Just Raw Data

In any kind of health assessment, it’s important to get the data collection right.

“We don’t just hand you data for data’s sake.” Capodilupo explains, “Every new metric comes paired with exactly what to do next—your AI coach saying, ‘Here’s how to lower that spike’ or ‘This change can improve recovery.’”

Broadly speaking, this kind of wearable strategy is weaving intelligence through the experience, helping people where they are at, and making health feel actionable every day. WHOOP also has the Daily Outlooks tool that gives tailored guidance for a user’s day based on their data, goals, and the weather. They get tips like breathing exercises, workout recommendations, and helping members make sense of their data.

There are also more achievable bedtime recommendations that help members make a decision based on duration and sleep consistency.

Healthspan & Your “WHOOP Age” — Your North Star on WHOOP

And there’s WHOOP’s most powerful tool: Healthspan, anchored by WHOOP Age, a composite biological-age score unifying strain, recovery, sleep, and fitness:

“We added a lot of powerful new features in this release, and we didn’t want new data streams to overwhelm anyone—so Healthspan gives you a single north star that unites everything.” Explains Capodilupo, “Yes, others have tried biological-age scores, but ours is uniquely transparent and actionable: it doesn’t just tell you your age number, it shows exactly which behaviors are working for or against your health and longevity goals—no one else makes it this clear.”

Users get a weekly score, and pinpointed recommended actions—like getting more HR Zones with more intense workouts, getting more strength training time in, or adjusting their bedtimes — to shave years off of their WHOOP Ages. This was developed in partnership with Dr Eric Verdin, CEO of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and builds on a massive body of longevity research.

    Women’s Hormonal Insights & Beyond

At a time where women’s bodies continue to be debated and often poorly understood, WHOOP is bringing some exciting updates to this area. WHOOP allows you to track menstrual cycles with precision, delivering day-by-day training and recovery guidance. Unique to WHOOP, this feature doesn’t silo menstrual cycle tracking, but rather deeply integrates it across the platform, overlaying your current cycle phase over all your trends, so you can understand how your data is influenced by your hormones. Tailored period predictions leverage temperature sensing, respiratory rate, and resting heart rate, and get smarter over time as well. Notably, the experience is tailored based on type of birth control, too. That’s a highly customized snapshot of any woman’s health, something that is personalized where personalization counts a lot.

    Advanced Labs Is Coming

Soon, users can get a set of comprehensive clinical labs which will get integrated into their daily WHOOP experience. Top clinicians will review and provide feedback on the lab results, while WHOOP translates lab anomalies into lifestyle tweaks and ongoing coaching.

“WHOOP Coach is like having a clinician in your pocket,” says Capodilupo. “It evolves with your body, goals, and environment.”

“Imagine being able to draw links between your insufficient sleep and metabolic health or being able to lower your cholesterol with targeted diet and exercise changes,” says Alexi Coffey, WHOOP Vice President of Product. “All of this is in service to making health personalized and actionable, giving you the bigger picture of health to drive lasting health outcomes.”

    A Global Public Health Opportunity

The latest releases fromWHOOP scale preventive care worldwide. By transforming wearables into health hubs—tracking BP, ECG, sleep, strain, hormones, and soon, advanced labs—WHOOP empowers millions to intercept risks and pivot healthcare from reactive to proactive.

“Caring about health can’t start when you’re sick,” Capodilupo reminds us. “Health is shaped in the everyday choices we make—now you can see the impact of each one in real time.”

This launch is more than a hardware upgrade; it’s a landmark in personal medicine, giving users unprecedented control over their long-term health and performance. This set of wearables also represents a broader trend in personal technology. We’re going to see all kinds of implementations and use cases for collecting and using this kind of real time data. But for anyone who may have a lurking health condition that’s undiagnosed, and that’s millions of us, this type of innovation is likely to be the interventionary force that we need.
