OpenAI launches a ‘warmer’ ChatGPT 5.1 RTZ #908

ChatGPT from OpenAI is getting ‘warmer’.

I’ve long argued that mainstream audiences in this AI Tech Wave, should NOT humanize (aka overly anthropomorphize) But, it remains a winning strategy for the leading LLM AI companies to encourage their users to do just that.

OpenAI last week tweaked their latest version of ChatGPT, version 5.1 to be ‘warmer’ and more ‘conversational’. Setting up ‘behavioral’ parameters that implicitly connect emotionally with main stream users. It’s something they’ve been leaning into of late, with Sora 2 AI being a recent example.

Axios puts it succintly with “OpenAI says ChatGPT is now smarter, warmer”:

“OpenAI is updating ChatGPT to have a more conversational tone, while also making it work faster for simple tasks and harder and longer for complex ones.”

Screenshot of a mobile app Personalization screen with Base style options like Default, Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky (selected), Efficient, Nerdy, Cynical, on a blue and pink gradient background.

“Why it matters: Users have formed strong attachments to ChatGPT’s personality and have openly rebelled when it changes.”

“Driving the news: The updates to GPT-5 make ChatGPT communicate in a more natural way.”

    • “The company previously allowed users to customize bots’ responses with presets including “Cynic,” “Robot,” “Listener” and “Nerd.”

    • “The GPT-5.1 update adds “Friendly,” “Efficient,” “Professional,” “Candid,” and “Quirky” and keeps the old tones.”

Kind of like how cars today comes with ‘Sports’, ‘Eco’, ‘Standard’ and other types of driving modes.

But now there’s also a greater emphasis on ‘Thinking’, another human inspired term, on the way to AGI:

“Between the lines: Both versions of the model — ‘Instant’ for quick replies and ‘Thinking’ for complex reasoning — get an upgrade.”

“What they’re saying: OpenAI’s CEO of applications, Fidji Simo, wrote in a blog post that while the company’s mission is to build AI that benefits humanity, it also wants chatbots that are useful in daily life.”

    • “With more than 800 million people using ChatGPT, we’re well past the point of one-size-fits-all,” Simo writes.”

    • “We want ChatGPT to feel like yours and work with you in the way that suits you best,” she adds.”

    That’s mainstream ambition and aspirations:

“Yes, but: Users and their loved ones already report forming unhealthy relationships with chatbots that can replace their real-world interactions, causing real psychological harm in some cases.”

“We have to be vigilant about the potential for some people to develop attachment to our models,” Simo says, adding that the company is working closely with experts “to better understand what healthy, supportive interactions with AI should look like.”

“The fine print: GPT-5.1 starts with paid users and then will expand gradually to all.”

    • “OpenAI says that the previous version will remain available in ChatGPT under the legacy models dropdown menu for paid subscribers for three months, “so people have time to compare and adapt at their own pace.”

Along with adding deep contextual memory, a subject I’ve also often discussed here. With memory included, this is all part of the strategy for the biggest AI companies to acquire, connect with, and keep for longer their core users of their growing portfolio of AI applications and services. This is a trend just getting started in this AI Tech Wave.

Expect Mag 7s like Meta, Google, Amazon with its Alexa products, and yes, even with Apple soon leveraging an AI revamped Siri, to follow these OpenAI steps.

We are in the beginning of the beginning phase of anthropomorphizing AIs. Despite cautionary comments by Nvidia founder/CEO Jensen Huang, Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman, and of course yours truly.

It’s all the more reason to go into this AI anthropomorphizing phase eyes wide open. All the way to AGI, whenever it comes. Stay tuned.
