OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says: A lot of people are glad that I have a kid, because they think now I will…

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed that colleagues believe his new role as a father will improve his decision-making for humanity’s future, describing parenthood as a life-changing experience that has “totally rewired” his priorities. The 40-year-old AI leader welcomed a baby boy in February with his husband, Australian software engineer Oliver Mulherin, through surrogacy.“A lot of people have said, ‘I’m very happy you’re having a kid, because I think you’ll make better decisions for humanity as a whole,'” Altman told Bloomberg TV in a June interview at OpenAI’s San Francisco headquarters. He recently emphasized on X that parenthood is “the best thing in the world” while admitting he couldn’t find a “non-cliché way” to express its impact.

Neurochemical changes shape AI leader’s perspective

Altman described an immediate transformation upon becoming a parent, noting he experienced a “neurochemical change” within the first hour of his child’s birth. “I felt this neurochemical change, and it happened so fast. I was like, ‘Oh, I get to observe this. I am being neurochemically hacked, but I’m noticing it happening,'” he explained. The timing coincides with OpenAI’s ambitious expansion, including the Trump-backed Stargate initiative, which Altman called “the biggest infrastructure project in history.” This next-generation data-center project aims to address surging AI computing demands.

AI industry bubble concerns shadow Altman’s parenting joy

Altman’s parenting reflections come as he recently admitted AI might be in a bubble, sending AI stocks tumbling for several days. He compared watching AI’s rapid development to “watching your own kid grow day to day,” noting how constant exposure makes dramatic changes feel less striking despite the breakneck pace. The OpenAI CEO has successfully transformed the company from a nonprofit research lab into a global AI powerhouse, delivering breakthrough products like ChatGPT and securing major partnerships including Microsoft’s multibillion-dollar investment. His personal milestone coincides with OpenAI potentially becoming the world’s most valuable private company, though Altman notably holds no equity and earns just $76,001 annually.
