The consumer and professional tech markets in China have had a rough time in the last few quarters, as they are being faced with new export regulations that evolve almost every month. After the US administration banned NVIDIA’s H20 AI accelerators from being sold in Chinese markets, it seems like the next target is the GeForce RTX 5090D, as according to Chiphell, it is claimed that NVIDIA has suspended the sales of the flagship RTX Blackwell GPU in the region, and has told AIBs to halt the sale for now.
Interestingly, the reason behind the sales halt hasn’t been disclosed officially yet, but according to the Chiphell thread, this is a “precautionary” move from NVIDIA, given the evolving situation between the US and China. The problem is similar to what Team Green experienced with the first major AI export control, when the US banned the sales of A100/H100 AI accelerators to China, but NVIDIA was unsure about the status of the GeForce RTX 4090, which was ultimately banned afterwards. So, to ensure certainty, NVIDIA has taken the step to stop producing the GeForce RTX 5090D for China.
While the decision hasn’t been communicated officially, AIBs like Colorful and Palit have already stopped selling the model. According to Benchlife, a “cooling module manufacturer” for the RTX 5090D, also received notice from AIBs to stop material preparations for the GPU, suggesting that the supply chain is indeed preparing for a potential ban on the RTX 5090D, which is indeed unfortunate for gamers in the region, considering it is the only flagship GPU from NVIDIA available to them.
NVIDIA has taken a huge hit from the new export regulations, as it is set to lose billions of dollars from the H20 export restriction, and now with a potential RTX 5090D ban, this would only give competitors more space. Companies like AMD are reportedly preparing for a China-specific model like the Radeon RX 9070 GRE, which shows that NVIDIA’s market share is at risk here.
